🚩 Client Red Flags Checklist

10 warning signs a client will be trouble. Check all that apply.

Before you sign that contract, run through this checklist. Each red flag you check is a reason to proceed with caution—or walk away. Trust your gut.

1. "This will only take a few hours"

Clients who underestimate scope rarely respect boundaries. They'll keep adding "small" tasks.

2. Vague about budget

"We don't have a budget yet" or "Just give us a quote" often means they can't afford you.

3. Rush timeline with no reason

"I need this tomorrow" without a real deadline screams poor planning and future stress.

4. Asks for "sample work" or spec work

Real clients pay for samples. Free work invites don't lead to paid work.

5. Communication is already slow

Takes days to reply during the sales process? Imagine when you're mid-project.

6. Talks about "exposure" or "future work"

"This could lead to more projects" is code for "we can't pay you properly now."

7. Wants unlimited revisions

"We'll know it when we see it" means endless tweaks without direction.

8. Badmouths previous freelancers

If everyone before you was "terrible," you'll be the next one they complain about.

9. Won't sign a contract

"We don't need paperwork" or "We work on trust" = no protection for you.

10. Gut feeling says "no"

Your intuition is a survival tool. If something feels off, it probably is.
